We sat down with Russell to talk about how he uses Snapchat to educate, inform and entertain.
SCSMM: How did you first discover Snapchat?
After having a Snapchat account for a while and not really using it, I began to take notice after hearing about Mark Suster and Justin Kan’s Snapstorms and soon after found so much more great content!
SCSMM: Why do you think Snapchat has taken off?
For me, it has a lot to do with the angle. Vertical video makes it a lot easier to watch but it also gives the impression the screen if filled more somehow which creates a more 1-on-1 FaceTime like vibe. Then you combine that with the behind the scenes type content you can find – Its great! Also the 10 second time limit is a big big plus, ensures the video can never drift to far off topic for example if you are trying to explain something.
SCSMM: What do you like to Snap about?
As a startup founder I try to show my journey but I also like to give short development tips particularly on Swift & XCode.
SCSMM: Why should everyone follow you on Snapchat and watch your stories every day?
It’s real – You can see the journey of building a startup from the idea and upwards. I like to think there is some helpful advice in there somewhere as well! 😀
SCSMM: What would you recommend someone do just starting out on Snapchat?
Just start creating – to begin with chances are your audience will be small so its no worry. If you just try and capture short moments of key things you have learnt and be real you will find yourself growing a following. The Snapchat community is one of the most helpful and welcoming you could find anywhere.
SCSMM: How do you develop your Snapchat stories? Are the spontaneous or do you plan them out?
It depends if I’m talking about development I will plan a little bit out to make sure the key points I want to get across are there. Otherwise if I’m talking about Snappd (my startup) it’s just think of what I’m going to say and record!
SCSMM: What else do you do? What is your business?
Aside from Snapchat I’m working on Snappd where we actually work with creators from places like Snapchat to help grow their audience and monetise. Recently I have started a podcast all about Snapchat stories and what helps drive engagement, each week I’ll be talking to different storytellers to see what works for them.
SCSMM: How do you think Snapchat has helped your life and business grow?
Connections for sure – I have spoken to people via Snapchat that would never have been possible otherwise – It has helped grow my network faster than any other type of networking. It’s also helped for talking to the camera as well and talking in general to improve the points I want to get across – so when there isn’t a 10-second limit its easy.
SCSMM: How is the Snapchat community different from other social networks?
Perhaps because of the lack on discovery on the app itself – it feels like Snapchat has a much more supportive community that you would find in other places. On Snapchat as well people want to be involved a lot more!
SCSMM: Who are YOUR favorite influencers on SnapChat?
My favourite influencers are Mark Suster, Justin Wu, Justin Kan, Adam Farr and many more!
