SCSMM: How did you first discover Snapchat?
Well, I’ll blame my daughter for this one. She takes my phone and installs this special little app called Snapchat. She tells me I can “draw” in it and send it to people. “So I can spend all this time drawing for a person, only for them to see it for 10 seconds?” – “yeah, basically”. I got used to it, “stories” came out and that’s all she wrote (drew?).
SCSMM: Why do you think Snapchat has taken off?
I think the addition of “Stories” helped it big time. Having a story that lasts 24 hours for anyone following you to see instead of the select few that received a 10 second clip was a game changer.
SCSMM: What would you recommend someone do just starting out on Snapchat?
If you are literally just starting out on Snapchat I’d recommend keeping your account private. At least in the beginning. Get comfortable snapping family and friends. From a Snap artist point of view. Practice, practice, practice. Follow and contact other Snap Artists for tips. There are a lot of talented people out there and most will respond. I try to respond to everyone that snaps me! Send me a snap.
SCSMM: How do you develop your snapchat stories? Are the spontaneous or do you plan them out?
Currently I just post randomly when I have the time. Very soon I’ll have themes for weekdays and have already made a battle plan. I also plan on interacting more with my followers instead of a portrait here and there.
SCSMM: What else do you do? What is your business?
During the day I’m a network administrator for a steel business. It’s the job that currently pays the bills. A couple nights a week I coach tumbling to school cheer squads in the area. I also coach high school cheerleading (Go Arrows!) and a Varsity Competition team. On the weekends I’m a photographer. I photo sports, portraits, weddings – pretty much everything. My plate is full. I squeeze in Snapchat drawings at night when I get to relax. I normally post to my story around 3 or 4am.
SCSMM: Who are YOUR favorite influencers on SnapChat?
Oh wow. There are many but I’ll mention some.
Shonduras. I’ve talked to him on the phone and via email and he’s exactly like he is on his story. Very cool guy.
CyreneQ, Wysamx and ShaunAyala. I love the way they interact with their followers and I’d like to do the same. Inspiration!
Emgarber and Salliasnap. 2 of the first bigger names I’ve interacted with early in the snapart game. Great people.
