Willy Mackey | Snapchat Artist

Willy is a UK based Snapchat artist. He loves to create surprising and funny doodles and share them with Snapchat friends. His aim is to make people smile, to surprise them and to brighten up their day in any small way.

How did you first discover Snapchat?

I created my Snapchat account in January 2016. I’d heard a lot about it in the tech press and wanted to try it out for myself. Within a couple of days I discovered the native drawing tool and I was hooked. My imagination kind of ran wild.

Why do you think Snapchat has taken off?

Snapchat isn’t immediately intuitive, and I think that’s actually worked in its favour. Millennials embrace this platform because it’s their playground. Their parents and grandparents don’t necessarily “get it”, and that’s a good thing.

Also Snapchat is a continuously evolving creativity platform. Regular app updates bring new features to play with and this really keeps users engaged. It’s remarkable how many creativity options this single app offers.

Since Snapchat stories expire after 24 hours, creators feel at ease sharing real moments – moments of stupidity and imperfection. Life isn’t perfect and people don’t feel the need to portray it that way on Snapchat. The result is like reality television on steroids.

What do you like to Snap about?

I am a UK based Snapchat artist. I love to create surprising and funny doodles and share them with my Snapchat friends. My aim is to make people smile, to surprise them and to brighten up their day in any small way I can. I also like taking the art to the next level and producing interactive games.

This is Snapchat though – so sometimes I just point my phone at my face and talk, or share snippets of my daily life (always with a humorous slant).

Why should everyone follow you on Snapchat and watch your stories every day?

Watch my Snapchat story and I’m fairly sure I can make you laugh and or smile. You might even be impressed with the drawings I manage to create using Snapchat alone.

What would you recommend someone do just starting out on Snapchat?

Be yourself and have fun. Don’t get bogged down focussing on number of views. Just make stories about what you love. Your passion will shine through and people will enjoy them and return to see more.

Have you ever been hired to represent a brand or product on Snapchat?

Yes.

Have you ever been hired to represent a brand or product on Snapchat?

Yes.

If so which ones and what was your experience like?

I had the privilege of contributing to W magazine’s The Art Issue 2016 on Snapchat Discover. It was an extremely positive experience.

How do you develop your Snapchat stories? Are the spontaneous or do you plan them out?

A mixture of both. I like to have the overall concept mapped out in advance, but during recording I like to be spontaneous.

What else do you do? What is your day job / Business?

IT professional.

How do you think Snapchat has helped your life and business grow?

It’s certainly helped to bring out my more outgoing side. I’m much more confident starting up conversations with new people in “real life” too now.

How is the Snapchat community different from other social networks?

I find it more authentic and unfiltered. Here we share ourselves and our lives as they are, without a thick layer of gloss. There is a really strong sense of community and belonging among creators.
